Big Brother Red Light Cameras?????
You Can Run 'Em, But You Can't Hide
You can guess by my title that I am not really in favor of the cameras. I know that I am probably not the only one who perceives these as the enemy. Let's take a look at their history and where they started.
According to Wikipedia these first received attention back in 1982 when a red light runner collided with an 18 month old girl who was riding in a stroller in New York. Evidence would suggest that the cameras which are placed in areas known for high numbers of collisions have reduced in crashes with less injuries. However, evidence is inconclusive whether these cameras have actually made the intersections safer.
The biggest contention is whether they are merely put up for the states revenue to increase or whether they really do care about public safety. While the jury is going to be out on that while, a few other points sparks interest for more.
Most are not aware that the companies that run several of the red light cameras are not for profit companies, but do actually make a profit off of these. There are also those individuals, including myself that believe that these cameras are an intrusion on privacy. And the other question comes to mind that if you receive a ticket in the mail and it's not you driving, what happens then?
Honestly, it seems that there has not been enough research to see if these actually make our intersections safer. I think if the numbers were there more people would be in favor of their use. But until then, I would rather be on the look out for the good 'ole cop watching, and take my chances!
