The Hype Of Hybrids
Okay so I know that there are a lot of fans out there of the hybrid vehicles. And I have to admit that I have gotten caught up in the hype that they offer as well. They are something new and so green and anyone who is cool has one. Right?
There are different thoughts on owning one of these vehicles. The car manufacturers would have you believe that you the environment is suffering because we don't all own one. However, after some looking around on the Internet, I have found that you might not want one.
Here are some cons to owning one:
- some states have added registration fees
- they cost more
- they have a complex power train which means that there are more chances for failure and fewer fixes that a common mechanic could do
- the parts are more expensive and not readily available
- they require special high mileage tires that cost more to replace
- the batteries are $5,000!!!!!!
A comparison done between a 2009 Toyota Camry to the hybrid version done on shows exactly the break down. According to amog.com the regular Camry starts at $19,145 and the hybrid version $26,150. The difference in gas mileage is 27 to 34. In order to make up that difference of $7,000 you would have to drive the vehicle for 204,000 miles to break even paying $4.50 a gallon.
This is only one comparison, but I honestly didn't find any that were much better. I was really surprised to say the least. It seems the only thing that Hybrids have going for them is the prestige in owning one and the effect that they don't have on the environment.
What are your thoughts on owning a hybrid? Do you have one and totally disagree with me? Let me know.
